United Nations Ends Restrictions on Syria's Leader Ahead of Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting the coming week.

He became transitional president following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, concluding 13 years of domestic strife.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

He had been subject to UN sanctions as the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for backing the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The pair met initially this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting does not represent his initial visit to the US during this period. In September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
