Major Internet Outage Affects Many Online Platforms and Apps

A large-scale online outage has impacted numerous sites and applications worldwide, with users experiencing troubles getting online following issues at Amazon’s online infrastructure platform.

The impacted platforms include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-operated services like its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of issues using the HMRC site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring users turned to social media to complain their security devices were not working.

In the UK alone, reports of disruptions on particular platforms ran into the tens of thousands for every service.

The company stated that the issue started in the eastern region of the United States at AWS, a division that supplies crucial internet backbone for many companies, who lease capacity on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing platform.

Just after late night (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), the company announced “increased error rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect appeared to hit services around the world, and the problem monitoring service reporting problems with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors internet outages, further indicated a increase in problems on Monday morning, with many of them located in the state of Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage started.
